How Particle uses AI.

AI is the engine behind Particle's marking. We think you deserve to know exactly how it works, where it can go wrong, and how we keep it safe for students.
What the AI does
When you submit a written answer, Particle sends the question and your answer to a trusted third-party AI model. The model marks your answer against a rubric written in the style of NESA marking guidelines, and returns a band mark, a per-mark breakdown of where you did and did not earn marks, and guidance on how to improve. We then show you the worked solution.
Multiple-choice questions are checked instantly against the correct answer on our own server. They do not use AI.
The AI can be wrong
Particle's marking is extremely well calibrated to NESA's HSC marking criteria and guidelines, so it closely mirrors how the HSC is actually marked. It is still a practice aid, not an official result: it can occasionally misread working, miss a valid alternative method, or be a little generous or harsh. Treat the mark as a strong guide:
- Always check important points against your syllabus and your teacher.
- Your school's marking is the real thing. Particle helps you get ready for it.
- If a mark looks wrong, trust your understanding and ask your teacher.
What the AI sees, and what it does not
- It sees the question and the text of your answer.
- It does not need or receive your name, email or any identity details to mark your work.
- Under our provider's terms, your answers are not used to train their AI models.
Because your answer is sent for marking, keep your answers to your Physics or Chemistry working. Do not type personal details, other people's information, or anything sensitive into an answer.
Keeping it safe for students
- Particle only covers NSW HSC Physics and Chemistry. It is not a general chatbot, and it is not a source of medical, legal, personal or safety advice.
- We minimise the data attached to your work, so there is little personal information involved in marking.
- Questions and worked solutions are reviewed by a person before students see them.
Use it to learn, not to cheat
Particle is built to help you understand the material and practise under real conditions. Do not submit its worked solutions or feedback as your own schoolwork, and do not use it during an exam or assessment where outside help is not allowed. See our Terms of Use.
